|
The Little Shop of Horrors (September 29, 30, October 1, 6, 7)
A comic spoof of 1950s horror films, this show is about a down-and out skid row floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Unfortunately "Audrey II" grows into an ill-tempered carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite. The book and lyrics are by Howard Ashman with music by Alan Menken. The show is based on the 1960s film directed by Robert Corman, with a screenplay by Charles Griffith.

Monoprints can be traced back to the 17th century and artists as well
know as Eegar Degas made over 300 monotypes in his career. So what is a
monoprint? The monoprint is a special, often one-of-a-kind image,
generally printed from a Plexiglas plate. This media is a combination of
other forms of printmaking, drawing and painting techniques. This said,
the process of making a monoprint can be as easy and enjoyable as making
a finger painting. It will be a fun class for beginners as well as
advanced students.

Painting Music: rhythm and movement in art is theme of 2006 Sheldon Art Exhibit
The Sheldon Statewide Exhibit in North Platte on Oct. 13 through Nov. 13 will explore the idea of musical analogy in painting that reached its full potential in the early 20th century with artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and resonated with American artists Stanton Macdonald – Wright and Morgan Russell.
The show, which will be at McKinley Education Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily during the exhibit, will focus on contemporary American artists who have aspired to reach a place of transcendence by emulating the aesthetic purity of music in their artwork.
The Sheldon is collaborating with UNL School of Music, Arts are Basic, and NET Radio to present a rich experience that will encompass both music and art and the relationship between the two.
Although it is open to all ages, the exhibit’s inception began in 1987 when former North Platte resident Rhonda Seacrest recognized that exposure to art museums was limited for children because of the distance to major museums. She collaborated with Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln to arrange for a traveling art exhibit to reach distant locations across Nebraska.
North Platte hosted the first exhibition. Since that time, the program has reached approximately 270,000 people with exhibitions in 24 communities across the state.
In the beginning, a Sheldon art representative trained local volunteers to act as docents (guides who provide tours of the show.) Later teachers were given packets to prepare their students for the exhibit. This year, Nebraska Arts Council funded a one-day workshop for teachers to experience all of the aspects of the exhibition.
The exhibition is made possible by the generous support of the membership of the Nebraska Art Association, the Nebraska Arts Council, James and Rhonda Seacrest, and Lonnie Pierson Dunbier.
Attend the Reception, see details below.
